When was it proclaimed a World Heritage Site? 1999
Did you know? Some of the fossils discovered in the Sterkfontein Caves date back more than 4 million years. The most famous discoveries made thus far include Mrs Ples (1947), Little Foot (2013) and Homo Naldi (2013). It is estimated that around 40% of the world’s human ancestor fossils have been found in the Cradle of Humankind.
What to do? Put on a pair of sturdy walking shoes and go on a tour of these enigmatic caves. It’s the perfect Heritage Day excursion.

Tour Robben Island
When was it proclaimed a Heritage Site? 1999
Did you know? It would suffice to say that Robben Island is one of South Africa’s most visited attractions. Apart from being home to African penguins, various seabirds and rare bank cormorants, the island is also home to rabbits, hundreds of them!
What to do? Go on a tour of this ‘living museum’ and allow ex political prisoners to give you a personal glimpse into the past.
Where is it? Table Bay about 6.9km to the West of Cape Town.
Cape Floral Region
When was it proclaimed a Heritage Site? 2004
Did you know? There are around 9 000 species of fynbos found in the Cape area of which 2 000 grow on Table Mountain itself! The Table Mountain National Park also forms part of the Cape Floral Region and has over 8 200 plant species.
What to do? Go hiking through this gorgeous region, also a fantastic spring time attraction!
Where is it? Stretches from the Cape Peninsula to the Eastern Cape
